Lolita. I thought it was a great pile of shit, if I'm really blunt. I never, ever skip passages in books but I skipped pages of Lolita because I just couldn't take it any more. Oh god, I hate it.

Then/than. '[Someone] and I' when it should be 'and me'. When people use 'went' when it should be 'gone' e.g "I should've went!" - that one gets me the most, I think. Except perhaps when people say "more better" or "most stupidest" etc.

Yes! His Dark Materials! I always forget about those books for some reason, but I loved them; I think I'll re-read them once my exams are over, actually. I've seen/read a lot of Haruki Murakami quotes but never anything more than that; is there anything in particular you'd recommend?

... "Whilst" is a British English thing? I never thought it mattered which you used - whilst/while.

Ok, so I would ask "what's your all-time, number one favourite book?" but I know that no one would be able to answer that! But what are your, I don't know, top five? Top ten? Just which books are your favourite, ones that you return to time and time again etc. etc.? For me, I think I actually do have an all-time, number one favourite book: The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets by Eva Rice. It's not a classic; it wasn't written a hundred (or more) years ago; it's not particularly sophisticated or philosophical or ground-breaking; it's just absolutely lovely. It's the only book that makes me cry every single time. I've read it more times than any other and I could finish it and re-start it straight away. Everyone needs to read it! Others that are up there: - Pride and Prejudice
- Peter and Wendy
- Rant by Chuck Palahniuk
- Winnie-the-Pooh/House at Pooh Corner.
- The Hobbit.

Am I the only one who's incredibly disappointed with this series? Actually, I know I'm not the only one in the world, but y'know, on this site...

When Harry Potter first came out, my mum spent aaaaages trying to convince me to read it. I was absolutely against it because I thought it was rubbish, even though I didn't really have a reason to/any knowledge of it. Then I caved. My favourite of the trio is Dan Radcliffe! Or, more seriously, I would say Ron, but that's more due to lack of options rather than actually really liking Ron.
My favourite book is probably Order of the Phoenix (possibly Goblet of Fire), but it's my least favourite film. The whole lead up to it I was most looking forward to the scene near the end where the fountain/statues at the Ministry come to life... But that wasn't in the film. Nor was any of the Department of Mysteries stuff. Basically, they cut all of what (in my opinion) made the book so great.

The first is just adorable. Have you read Anne Hathaway by Carol Ann Duffy? She does the same sort of thing with parts of English ("his touch/a verb dancing in the centre of a noun") and I just love that kind of thing.
I like lilac, too, but I'm not sure about the word "metallics"? Maybe I've missed the significance/point of the word, but I feel like it jumps out a bit too much; the image of metal seems a bit harsh when the rest of the poem is actually quite soft.

I already had three e-text books . D: I hated it because I would have to print the pages out every time I came to class. That sounds like the most ridiculous system ever. If you have to print pages out anyway, it should be a real book! For personal use, I think e-readers are good, but it doesn't make sense to use them for something like that.

My absolute favourite (for now, at least!) is Bon Iver. Cannot get enough. Past that, though: - DeYarmond Edison
- McFly
- Charlie Simpson
- Modest Mouse
- Yann Tiersen
- Ludovico Einaudi
- The Used
- Is Shania Twain 'embarrassing'? 'Cause I seriously love her.

I'm very happy! I definitely think I'll use it; it'll be really nice to have a place to discuss all English major-related things with (unfortunately, I don't even get that in my English lessons). As for other boards/sub-boards, it's hard to say right now, but I'm really excited about this.

I used to be very much against e-readers, purely on principle. However, my sister got one last Christmas and absolutely loves it; she literally takes it everywhere with her. She reads more than I do even though she works eleven-hour days and I'm a part-time English student! Also, a lot of the arguments put forth in favour of them on the blog have convinced me. A Kindle is definitely going on my Christmas list!
