My name's Corey, I'm currently at community college pursuing an English degree, but I'm accepted to UC Berkeley as a transfer for English where I'll be attending next Spring.
My favorite author is Hemingway, I enjoy all sorts of Literature, and I plan on writing the next great American novel.
I am an English major because I like to read, not necessarily because I like English literature. I absolutely love mythology (Norse Mythology especially) and find ancient cultures fascinating.
I chose my forum name because I had first used it on different forums, but it applied extremely well here. I count finishing and loving Moby Dick as one of my greatest accomplishments in high school since I read it on my own.
I won't include a link to my blog because it's rather lame and uneventful.
And that's that I suppose.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! You can't believe how bummed out I was when I realized that English applies as a language, and it's not just the name of the major for reading books all the time. I guess I always assumed that an English major just meant literature. Not specifically English lit.
Oh well, now I don't have to learn any other languages, so that's nice I guess.

If you particularly want to read books in other languages, most universities have upper-level language courses that are just literature classes in that language. UC Berkeley undoubtedly would.
Speaking of which, I'm reading through the archives of The YUNiversity (grammar/SAT prep tumblr) and it has quite a few jokes about UC Berkeley (the blogger's either a student or an alum, methinks). You might check it out: theyuniversity.tumblr.com

I absolutely love mythology (Norse Mythology especially) and find ancient cultures fascinating. This might be premature, but I love you.

Simple things like a passage of a poem, or a sentence in a play can cause such an instant connection with people you've never met. Simply through the universality of common words and stories And I'm really thinking there should be a mythology thread somewhere on this forum. I was debating making one earlier, but I needed to work on my paper. (Still not done btw. Deconstruction of Marlow's Doctor Faustus. Huzzah! Probably why I was philosophical instead of saying something normal such as, "Erm. I love you too?")

This might be premature, but I love you. Not going to lie, this is what I love about English majors. Simple things like a passage of a poem, or a sentence in a play can cause such an instant connection with people you've never met. Simply through the universality of common words and stories. I think what it is is that we're all so passionate, and that makes sense because what we study are records of the human experience. Every book, every poem, every play is a testament to the lives of those who came before, whether they intended it or not. We, as English majors, are surrounded by that, day in and day out. We're immersed in it. Like it or not, we study people as much as words, since words are only given meaning when they interact with humanity itself, and by studying these haphazard marks on a page that serve as pure, physical manifestations of our thoughts, beliefs, dreams, and desires, we delve into that innermost core of what it means to be human, and all the emotions and passions that demands. So that's why we can have such a strong connection to others over a few brief lines or even a small smattering of words on a page written hundreds of years ago by some long-dead man (or woman), because as we read them, we can feel the emotions and feelings and all the rest of what it means to be human. We're steeped in emotion, every day. ...And that's my philosophical bit for tonight.

Oh my goodness. You successfully one-up'd my philosophical point. This is why I feel like a poor English major sometimes, because I could not even come close to conveying it as well as you did.
I'd like that post if I could though.

That was coherent? Good, I'm glad. I was mostly rambling. There was a lot of wrist twirling as I tried to wrench the correct words out of my head. Glad you liked it, though. And I'm sure you're not a poor English major. You seem quite intelligent (thank the gods) and coherent to me. Plus, you like mythology. In my eyes, you can do little (or no) wrong.

**Mythology High Five!**
If it's not coherent I'm just that out of it.
On the topic of mythology, I recently had this insane increase of fascination with Mesoamerican cultures. I almost want to go into archaeology just so I can go down there and learn everything I absolutely can about their mythology, culture, and religions since it's so unknown. (The Olmec People specifically)
But on mythologies I actually know about: Thor can go die. Odin is where it's at in Norse myths. It absolutely kills me to see people that only care or know about Thor </3

It absolutely kills me to see people that only care or know about Thor </3 Odin is one of my gods, so yes, he's awesome. Loki and I get along pretty well, too. ...Most of the time. The Olmecs were fascinating, but I'm a huge fan of the Aztecs and Mayans, though I haven't studied them very much. I want to go to Central and South America sometime (because it's cheap to travel) and look at all the ruins.

I feel like this may the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
And I'm proud to have been the catalyst for the creation of the Great Mythology Thread.
Protip: Catalyst has been one of my favorite words for as long as I can remember.
