Perhaps this thread can be a place where you list your favorite songs to listen to while you write. I know I prefer to listen to classical music, particularly symphonies, when I write.
What are some of the artists/bands you listen to while writing?

I listen to a lot of movie soundtracks while writing/reading because I can enjoy it and not get distracted by the lyrics. Lately, it's been the Doctor Who Series 5 Soundtrack, the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 Soundtrack, and The Social Network Soundtrack

Oh, DEFINITELY movie soundtracks. They're so epic and can really help me embody the emotions I'm trying to get across.

For me, it has to do with what it is I'm writing about. Like, the last few things I've written were done while I listened to F#A#Infinity by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I'd say that the whole mostly instrumental post-rock with doom metal, like My Dying Bride, help me capture my pieces.

I listen to all my classic rock and blues while I write. It's a bit strange, considering it can be a bit loud and harsh, but I don't really like anything else. I tune it out by mistake eventually, anyway.
I'm in the process of creating playlists for my characters though. Does anyone else have playlists for their characters?

I find Mogwai to be amazing to listen to while writing. I've heard mention of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but have yet to check them out.

I used to try to listen to classical and whatnot when I wrote, so that the lyrics didn't detract from the flow. But over the years, I discovered that I can get a lot of inspiration from the lyrics, even writing whole stories based off of one line that struck me just right. Some of my stuff that I've enjoyed going back and reading has been a little bit sharper, a little bit more harsh, and usually came about while listening to things like The Dead Weather, The Kills, The White Stripes, Cake, The Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age, Spoon, Modest Mouse, The Raconteurs... man there's a lot of Jack White there.
Anyways, some of the softer, sad-not-angry, nearly romantic stuff happens when I'm listening to The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Elvis Costello, Pink Floyd, The Black Keys, Death Cab for Cutie, Radiohead, Violent Femmes, Nick Drake, Pearl Jam...
Oh my, I think I listed too many bands. Ah well.

I like to listen to movie soundtracks when I write, but also video game soundtracks. My current favourite is The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess soundtrack, especially Midna's Theme (which is such a haunting and beautiful song, I just love it). The only problem with writing to video game music is that it's so familiar, I sometimes focus on it instead of the writing.

I listen to either really angst-ridden indie/pop music (Elliott Smith, PJ Harvey, etc) or classical - I find that Beethoven and Bartok both work pretty well for me when I write.
In response to the comment on making playlists for characters - yes! I do playlists for specific scenes too, if I'm working on something long.

I actually have an essay writing playlist on my iPod, comprised of the following songs:
Oxford Comma- Vampire Weekend (and I DO give a fuck about an Oxford comma) Cold War- The Morning Benders You Make My Dreams- Hall & Oates The Well- A Fine Frenzy Bowl of Oranges- Bright Eyes First Day Of My Life- Bright Eyes Displaced- Azure Ray Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying- Belle and Sebastian
I also have playlists for stories with different moods- angsty, romantic, light, etc.

For me, it's almost always instrumental stuff. I get distracted by lyrics too easily.
I usually try to play stuff that's similar to what I'm writing, like when I wrote my paper on the 1992 film Bram Stoker's Dracula, I listened to Castlevania soundtracks almost nonstop.

Mostly instrumental, though I occasionally use mood-based playlists.

Movie soundtracks. It's easier for me to write to instrumental songs, as a rule.
Oh, and the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack. It's epic.

Soundtracks are good. Specifially the LotR and 28 Weeks Later soundtracks.
I'd also recommend most post-rock for all writers out there. In my view, it's by far the best genre for conveying emotion and mood. Check out bands like Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros, and Yndi Halda.
