I've been on for I bit, but I guess I should formally introduce myself.
My name is Kori (also spelled Corey, although that always gets me confused for a man,) and I, too, am an English Major, with an emphasis on Creative Writing. I'm in my last year for my degree at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, and since I am in no way prepared to take on the real world yet, I am currently applying for graduate school. In fact, I'm "taking a break" from working on one of my Self-Assessment Essays right now. xP
I am a fan of what I like to term "fantastic fiction," borrowed from Gary K. Wolfe's great book on genre theory Evaporating Genres, so I guess that means science fiction and fantasy, though I prefer to write mainly urban fantasy myself.
So, hello everyone.

Milwaukee! My boyfriend goes to school at MSOE! YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT/WHERE THAT IS. If not, no worries. No one else does anyway.... How do you like that city, anyway? It's way freaking confusing for me; driving through it is my worst nightmare. I always end up in the same weird graveyard just off the expressway. I think it's a veteran's cemetery? Anyway, it's strange. Even if I have the GPS set for MSOE, it takes me to that cemetery. REGARDLESS. Hope you're liking it here! And I see you write urban fantasy. What kind? Favourite authors? Urban fantasy is what stole me away from high fantasy years ago. Have you read Patricia Briggs's works? Her Alpha/Omega series and Mercy Thompson series are awesome, and if you like werewolves and good writing, I recommend you check them out. Avoid Caitlin Kittridge. Her books are awful, so unless you're in dire need of a crack author, avoid her.

I have to go past it every day to get to work, and the greatest chili place ever is over there. XP But Milwaukee's great once you get used to it. Driving is a little confusing, but luckily I get to take the bus everywhere instead. And I love that. I lived in the boonies most of my life, and being able to get around without a car is just fantastic. I do enjoy Patricia Briggs, though for some reason Alpha/Omega just didn't grab me. I'm also a fan of Jim Butcher (Harry Dresden's my favorite!), Simon R. Green, TA Pratt, Mark del Franco, Seanan McGuire and the like. I tend to write that kind of fantasy as well - sort of magic in the real world.

Half the streets turn one way after 5PM! And then, on weekends, half the street lights turn to flashing yellow/red. WTF. This is madness. I keep trying to get into Jim Butcher's Dresden Files but it just doesn't grab me. I've picked up Storm Front twice now and never get past page five. Perhaps third time will be the charm...? Never read any of the others, so I will have to check them out. Currently working my way (albeit slowly) through A Song of Ice and Fire. 1004 pages for just the second book? Yeesh. I have little time to read, too, so it's slow going.

I guess I'm lucky the school furnishes us with bus passes then. xD
But do try Butcher again if you get a chance. The first books are a little harder to get into, but his writing style improves once he gets a handle on the characters. The latest one is kind of fantastic. I couldn't put it down. Didn't take a shower for two days because I didn't want to get the book wet.
