Are any Armadillos Sigma Tau Delta members? My university doesn't actually have a chapter, but as I'll hopefully be eligible this coming Spring, I'm planning on chartering a chapter here! Any insight, comments, or anything regarding Sigma Tau? I'd love to get feedback from current members so that I'm more prepared to charter my own chapter and be more comfortable being in charge/running things when we start!

*raises hand* Yep yep. I posted an Ask about using the FYEMA posts. Cat here. I'm Vice President of the Xi Delta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta.
You may want to double check with the Sigma Tau people about your university not having a chapter. They could have one, it could just be inactive. Other than that, have fun and good luck starting a new one!
One thing you'll really want to do is to get the support of your English faculty. It can be difficult, and I know ours can be a wee bit...hesitant, but as long as you respect them and their time, they should be more than willing to lend you a hand.
Let me know if you have any questions!

Yay thanks! I've checked through all the Sigma Tau records online and there's no record of a chapter at my university...which is odd, it's a large public university...I guess no one's just taken the initiative yet. Yeah, I'm close with a teacher in the history department who said she can talk to some of the English professors about it. Plus I've taken several upper level English courses with professors I'm not timid about talking to, hopefully for some support. Thanks again!

I'm curious: what are the benefits of joining Sigma Tau Delta? I've resisted so far because I don't feel like paying the membership fee and I don't really have an interest (or the time) to go to the big conference, but I can't help but wonder if I'm missing out on something.

Resume building, networking opportunities, you get a sash/cord/etc. to mark you as special during graduation, you work closer with faculty of the English department as well as your fellow English majors. I would highly recommend it because it's all upside, not downside. I'm not sure about your particular chapter, but the membership fee should be a lifetime due (at least, to the general organization). You could always ask to attend one of their meetings before you commit to it. Our chapter allows prospective members to sit in on meetings and see what it is we do, even help out as they like. I'd really recommend it, though, as it just look sgood in the English community and gives you some great opportunities (like the conference and building your network for when you graduate).

Ah, networking. That's the one I always forget about, being a bit of a hermit. Our membership fee is a one-time payment... I'd just rather spend it on books ;D. But I'll definitely look into joining; I could definitely use some networking and resume-building opportunities. Thanks!

It also provides that chance for you to meet and hang out with like-minded people. Sure, you see your fellow English majors in class everyday, but this allows you to get to know them and make friends. Our group has a lot of group-bonding activities planned next semester, like Scrabble tournaments and trips to see plays/movies; I am really excited. It can also help provide a distraction from school stress. Every group is different and a lot depends on the attitude of the executive board running the group. But my experience has been great so far!

I made the choice not to join, but I was invited twice. Hell, I might just throw in this Fall to get one last siqq brag on the grad school applications.

I'm a member. I will admit my school's branch tends to just involve drinking a lot (I mean a lot) of wine with the English department.
Sometimes we do play readings- while drinking wine. We have an annual banquet- where everyone cowers by the bar awkwardly for the first half-hour and then we argue incessantly about literature.
We also sometimes to wine and cheese gatherings with guest speakers.
I seriously think my dues just payed for all the wine. My school = classy.

So this year, our chapter has done more in five weeks than any other year I've been in Sigma Tau and more than I can see a record of in whatever we have. We've done our book and bake sale (currently in progress; made over $270 in two days) and started a Scrabble Tournament.
That may not SEEM like a lot to the rest of you, but seriously, our chapter was dead in the water, essentially. We have a Poe'n'Co. night planned for Halloween this year. Spooky stories by the fire on Halloween, since it's a Monday this year.
I've a question, though: how many of you have gone or are going to the convention, this or previous years?

*bump* >>
What do y'all Sigma Tau members do at your meetings, anyway? Eternal Lobster was apparently told that our meetings are boring, so I'm curious as to what other chapters do.

*ignoring that...*
Anyone going to the convention?
Also, seriously. There has to be more Sigma Tau members here. I know! OLIVE! Get over here.
