Well hello fellow Armadillo's.
My name is Travis and I'm 23 years old. Currently living in Iowa City, IA with my wife who is studying at the pharmacy school here. I am currently getting my Associates at a community college and will be transferring to University of Iowa next fall (2012) to finally focus on my major of English with focus on creative writing and hopefully get into their magnificent Writers' Workshop once finished with my Bachelor's. Yeah, I am a bit behind but better late than never to start focusing in college and actually passing your courses.
I decided around the age of 16 that I wanted to be a writer due to my over-active imagination, my joy of reading, and I really can't see myself being happy doing anything else. Luckily, I found a girl that supports my goal and stays positive about it when I am pretty down on myself and thinking my ideas/writing suck.
I've pretty much lived in Iowa my whole life except for two years (not consecutive) when I moved to Omaha, NE since it was right across the Missouri River from where I did live (couldn't stand living in Council Bluffs anymore). I originate from central Iowa (around Des Moines) but moved to the western part of the state my freshman year of high school. Kind of grew up hating the state but kind of odd how much the place has really influenced my writing and ideas. Have a strong love for the state now actually.
I don't really have one set genre that I stick to when I write. I have ideas for literary fiction, young-adult fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi pretty much. Been interested in trying my hand at magic realism lately.
When not reading, writing, or attending college courses I tend to waste time on Tumblr or playing video games. The video game addiction is no where near as bad as it use to be though since I quite World of Warcraft. That game and other MMO's are the worst time-killers in existence, so I keep away from them (for now). So now I stick to my PS3 and will play a few games on my PC once I get it built this fall. I'm into Warhammer 40,000 but don't paint the mini's and play the tabletop game anymore due to it being to expensive. I stick with the books and video games pretty much. Lets see... I enjoy comic books, graphic novels, and some anime and manga.
Some of my favorite authors:
Franz Kafka, H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Geoffry Chaucer, Willa Seibert Cather, Jack London, Charles Dickens, George Orwell, Richard Bach, Nick Hornby, Sherman Alexie, Robert A. Heinlein, John Green, Neil Gaiman, Robert Jordan, Jim Butcher, Frank Herbert, Dan Abnett (40k), Ben Counter (40k), Graham McNeill (40k), George R.R. Martin, Cornelia Funke, E. E. Knight, C. S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Philip Pullman, J.K. Rowling, Raymond E. Feist, Terry Pratchett & Douglas Adams.
*(40k) meaning writers for Warhammer 40,000 novels - my guilty pleasure/entertainment reading
Can't think of much else to say, except that I look forward to becoming one with the community. Been looking for a place to post some writing to get feedback, discuss writing in general, and to also discuss books.
