I was lurking around the boards and couldn't find any real mention of any real interest in underground hip hop, or even mainstream rap. It kind of blows me away how limited the scope of tastes is around here. I'd love for people to prove me wrong though.

I'm trying hard to figure out a response that's not excessively pejorative, but I have a hard time understanding why you would need it defined. I'm not trying to split hairs in the genre, so it's not like I'm going to claim that a group like Dead Prez is hip hop and Wyclef Jean isn't. It's a broad category.

Sorry, it's just that I wouldn't say I'm a 'fan' of hiphop, and I've never pursued listening to the modern stuff on purpose. I am, however, often pleasantly surprised when something or other comes on the radio and I enjoy the strong beat. Unfortunately, I often find the lyrics objectionable, not because I'm a prude but because I just don't enjoy the songwriting style of most hiphop and I can't relate to a lot of it.
I do listen to some hiphop predecessors on occasion (Well, it might not be predecessors, but it has a beat similar to hiphop but different and its old). I've transferred some of my father's old Tom Tom Club records to MP3, for example. I also enjoy a lot of alternative music that sounds like it's vaguely influenced by hiphop, like the Constellations.
...So long story short, I can appreciate the strong beat of hiphop but I can't relate to the lyrics, thus I listen to all of it's cousins instead. Sorry if you think this means my tastes are limited. If you want to recommend some group or a song to me I'll be happy to try it out, I just haven't found hiphop with lyrics I like yet, I suppose.
There is tons of music out there. One can have broad tastes without including a single genre out of the dozens. If it makes you feel better, I listen to music of every genre from show tunes to dubstep to shoe gazing. Honestly, I don't know how you got the idea that our tastes are limited. Saying someone is limited in music tastes because they don't like hip hop is like saying that someone is limited in their food tastes because they avoid buying cheddar.

Um... I'm certainly not a "fan" of the genre, but there are some bits of it that I like. Typing "hip-hop" into my iTunes search bar and seeing what of my collection pops up... About half of it is Tupac; after learning that his music is scattered with literary references (and that he read everything from Machiavelli to Maya Angelou during his time in prison), I downloaded his greatest hits album, and found I didn't dislike it. The rest is scattered tracks that just wandered into my collection.
Anyway, I'm the farthest thing from an expert, but I do tend to defend the genre when it comes up in conversation. My mother loves to wax poetic about the misogynistic messages, so it's left to me to remind her that she can't judge the genre by the few songs of it she's heard.
Also, I love slam poetry. Love love love it. Could never write or perform it, but love to listen and watch. It isn't hip-hop, but it's definitely related -- give a slam poet some instrumentals and a chick in the background going "Oooo" and "Aaaaah" and he'd have a record deal.

All the old stuff is great. The hip-hop and rap nowadays just sucks (read: Lil' Wayne. I absolutely cannot stand him). I'm not familiar with underground rap or hip-hop but I loved the mainstream stuff from a few years ago. I used to jam out to Do or Die and blast Biggie through my boombox. I also love Kanye West. He makes good music.

Your last statement was pretty hypocritical . Most hip hop doesn't have the same kind of industry conventions that popular rap does. I agree, slam poetry is really impressive, and I could go on and on about slam poets that give me chills. Most of rap is structured around word play and allusions. Yeah, most mainstream rap is really bad, but that's because it's mainstream. It's being created just to sell records. If you check out some of my links you might find some things that you really like. There are a lot of underground hip hop bands that have lines about Lil' Wayne, like in Agony Fires by Army of the Pharaohs: "My maturity shows / When I take these young rappers and I murder they flows / Including Weezy's and Jeezy's, if I had a genie / I'd make major label rappers Ice Cube's and Eazy's."

I listen to rap and hip-hop! Though I listen to Lil' Wayne, so maybe you don't want me on this board.
LUPE FIASCO. Check him out. Also everyone should find the Austin City Limits episode with Mos Def and k'naan, because it is THE BEST. PS check out k'naan if you haven't yet.
Also, Nicki Minaj! I love a female rapper, and the last mainstream one was Lil' Kim. And "Up out My Face" is awesome.
