Hello Armadillos.
I am a non-bookmark-user. I tend to fold the corner of the page. Yes, I know, I know, I'm sorry.
In any case, I have seen the error of my ways and wish to get on the bookmark bandwagon. However, I don't want just any bookmark. I want the best bookmark money can buy.
Could you please recommend features that you have enjoyed in bookmarks, or that you would like to see in a bookmark?
I realise this is an odd question. But please, stretch your imagination. For the sake of page-corners everywhere.
Yours, Moose The Moose

I am mixed about bookmarks. The really nice ones that they sell with glitter, threads or beads, or whatever fancy things; that cost more than ten dollars are nice to look at, but they are so clunky that they always fall out if I put my book into my purse or a backpack. I generally use thin pieces of paper that happen to be lying near when I'm reading, it could be a candy wrapper or a day by day calendar page. As long as it stays in place, no matter where I put the book, that's the bookmark I fancy.

iClips! (That's a link, by the way; it's hard to tell!) My boyfriend's mother got me a bunch for Christmas and I am in love with them. They're awesome. You can just clip them to your page when you're reading and they don't get lost. If you're reading outside and don't feel like constantly holding the pages down (because you're lazy, like me), you can use the iClips to weigh them down!

I wasn't a bookmark-user, but when I was in Venice last December I got a gorgeous leather one from a bindery, and have yet to lose it. We've been together for six months, and couldn't be happier.

I have a porcelain box with shapes cut out of it, designed to cast shadows on the wall when you light a candle in it, that I have filled with bookmarks of all different kinds. I have "traditional" bookmarks: free ones from the library, plain printed ones, a plush cow one, and even a string one designed to go between the pages, wrap around the spine and clip together with a magnetic butterfly and flower. Aside from those, I also have a collection of things that can be used as bookmarks: old fortune cookie fortunes, Yu-Gi-Oh cards, ripped strips of a post-it, etc. I'm much more likely to use the latter, despite how beautiful some of my bookmarks are. rayyychul: Maybe iclips are completely different, but I once had a magnetic bookmark. It looks like it works the same was as the iclips, only it left this charcoal gray residue on my pages after using it to hold my place =(

Oh no That's awful. These definitely don't. If they did, I would not be recommending them. I'm pretty OCD about keeping my books looking like now and I'd be pissed if I used a bookmark and it left residue on one of my books

I usually use the receipt for the book I bought, unless I need that because I used my bank card and in which case I use a piece of scratch paper (1/4th of a piece of printer paper because people fuck up printing jobs all the time at work). Or if I have a lot of time on my hands one evening at work, I use the multitude of sharpies at the desk to make bookmarks out of the pieces of scratch paper and 'laminate' them with tape. Those work for me better than anything else I've ever tried. Regular bookmarks fall out and I don't really like magnetic bookmarks. Just... something I don't like about them.

Thanks guys. Does anyone have any ideas for what they might want from a bookmark? Or just something peripheral to book-reading which could in some way be incorporated into a bookmark?

I don't know about you, but I keep quotes for my books. One of my early ways of keeping track of them was to use an index card for writing page numbers. A bookmark that not only holds your current place, but also reminds you of passages you liked? Bonus.

All of the official bookmarks (ie, bookmarks that were made to be bookmarks) that I have slide out of my book like *that* and lose my place.
So I fold page-corners. I've thought about using those metal book marks that curve over the spine of the book, with a flower or whatever on the end. Those may work better.
Occasionally I'll put in a receipt or scratch piece of paper, but only with library books.

I have two, gorgeous, handmade, wooden bookmarks at home. They're entirely beautiful and made out of various woods to get a distinct pattern. I will be sure to pick them up this weekend and post a picture early next week.

I use to use the pretty metal ones with all the beads and what not, but it pissed me off that overtime I pulled my current read out of my backpack/purse it would get caught on something a fall out! I also tried the metal ones without ribbons and beads, and those still fell out. Then I finally tried the magnetic ones. I've never loved them more!!!
Any bookmark that is cardboard based is also good, although if they have a ribbon and what not they can fall out too. I also use index cards, Magic the gathering cards, paper, or anything else i can find at the moment. Even my bed spread if my mom is screaming her lungs out for attention and I'm in a hurry.

My bookmarks have been everything from a nice metal one (which falls out, I hear you) to a stuffed animal. As long as it saves the page, I'm happy. Right now, there's a plastic ribbon in my book, which actually works quite nicely if it's long enough.
But usually a piece of paper works the best. Sticky notes are nice because they're hard to lose until the sticky-ness loses out. If you want a pretty piece of paper, maybe try getting patterned paper from a scrap booking store and decorate it or something?
I like the idea of the index card to save quotes, except I know I will lose it eventually. I don't think I've ever gotten through a book without accidentally leaving my bookmark somewhere or other and just picking up the nearest scrap paper to use instead. I'll save it on my evernote, thanks.
