I realize that no one wants to think about classes during summer, but I have a concern. This fall I'll be a sophomore and I'm signed up for 15 credits. I'm taking two Lit classes, Liberal Arts math (don't judge), Ethics, and American Government. The thing is, my friends and my advisor told me I would be overwhelmed. But isn't that a normal schedule for and English major?
How many credits do you guys usually take?

Is this your first semester? That amount seems okay to me. I've taken 16 credits at most, and while it was difficult, I was able to struggle through it. I usually just have ~13 now each semester. Dodger will take 18+, I don't know how she does it. You should be fine if you are good at time management.
I am taking 8 credits for this summer, with 9 being the maximum we are allowed to take at my uni. I will definitely say do. not. do. this. unless you have the time and like to torture yourself during the summer.

I took 15 credits every semester of college until my last year when I had so few classes left to take that I took 12 each semester. 15 should be fine.

You should be fine. I always did 12 and didn't feel the slightest bit overwhelmed, even when I worked 30hours/week as well. You might get unlucky with papers and finals though. I had three papers due one week, and three finals in as many days last semester.

This fall will be my second semester. Well, third technically since I'm taking biology now. I didn't think 15 credits would be too bad since I did it last semester (with 9 credits of honors classes). The only thing that may be awkward is that my Lit classes are taught by the same professor.

I usually take between 18 and 21. MY sophomore year, I took one 24 hour semester and a 25 hour semester. This past year, I've been able to relax a bit though and enjoyed two 17 hour semesters. It depends on your study/homework habits more than anything else. If you're one of those people who has to do everything the professor assigned, it might overwhelm you, but if you're fine with cutting corners, you should be OK.

Credits also change systems between colleges... At mine, 15/semester was average, but different schools have different ways of counting them.

I'm taking 18 next semester.
I will be totally overwhelmed and want to die. But I have learning disabilities and crappy time management skills, so there you go.

I took 18/semester my first year (with 12 being the minimum for "full time" and 18 being the max for flat-rate tuition) and then 16.5 my third and 16 last semester. That .5 credit is orchestra, which still meets 4 hours/week (like a 4 credit class). My second semester, when I was taking 18, that included band and orchestra, so I was meeting 8 hours a week (plus practice outside of class) for 1 credit. That got annoying.
All of this is with working 20/week, the max my university will let me (I have an on-campus job). I'll be doing 19 credits in the fall, but that's because one of them is a TA position and they're paying for the extra credit cost.
tl;dr I realize that your credit system might work out differently, but 15 sounds like a piece of cake to me.

You should be fine. My scholarship requires that I take at least 28 credits in a year. Since I'm only taking 13 credits this semester I know I'll be taking 15 next semester. By graduation you'll probably have around 120 credits, which divided up is 15 credits per semester. Only really worry when you get up to 18 or higher.

Honestly, this is the kind of thing that you need to figure out for yourself (that's not meant to sound snarky!). For some, five classes may be perfectly fine. For others, five may be too much.
Personally, it depends on what the courses are. I'd be overwhelmed with (for example) three English classes and two science classes, because I'm terrible at managing my time properly and I suck at sciences.
Here's my advice: look at your university's withdrawal policy. If you think you can do it, seriously, go for it. However, you find you're really struggling within a week or two of classes starting, consider withdrawing. A (temporary) W looks a lot better than an F. You can always retake the class(es) you withdrew from in the upcoming years! I knew it's different everywhere, but my university lets you withdraw within the first two weeks of classes without penalty (so, full refund and no W).
My biggest regret of my first year was not withdrawing from a course I knew I would not do well in when I had the opportunity.

Dodger will take 18+, I don't know how she does it. Magic. Next semester, I'm only taking fifteen credit hours. I'm going to be so bored. Luckily, I'm taking Italian, so that should take up some time. But yeah, I take five to seven classes a semester, plus I run at least four student groups and participate in one or two more. I actually have more downtime than you'd expect, but that's in part because I don't sleep. But yes, in sum: magic.
