What are some of your favorite song lyrics? There is the Favorite Quotations thread, but my list of lyrics may hijack the thread, so I started a new thread for all of us to share favorite song lyrics! Here are some of my favorites:
"And you choose to break our families/ Tell me you've used all precautions known/ And I'll stand beside the ones who stood alone/ How long will we have to sing until you finally bring our sons, our daughters home?" Kangaroo Cry by Blue October
"When I looked at the man who would be king/ the man who would be king goes to the desert, the same war his dad rehearsed/ Came back with flags on coffins and said 'We won, oh we won.'" 20 Dollar Nose Bleed by Fall Out Boy
"I don't care what you think as long as it's about me." I Don't Care by Fall Out Boy

Very long, mine are... I'm sure I have more somewhere...
“Love is but the song we sing, And fear's the way we die You can make mountains ring Or make angels cry Know the bird is on the wing And you may not know why”
--“Get Together” by the Youngbloods
“How can you stand the silence That pervades when we all cry? How can you watch the violence That erupts before your eyes? How can you tell us something Just to keep us hangin' on? Something that just don't mean nothing When we see it you are gone Clinging to some other rainbow While we're standing, waiting in the cold Telling us the same old story Knowing time is growing old”
--“Wonderful Remark” by Van Morrison
“How can we listen to you When we know your talk is cheap? How can we ever question Why we give more and you keep? How can your empty laughter Fill a room like ours with joy When you're only playing with us Like a child does with a toy? How can we ever feel the freedom Or the flame lit by the spark How can we ever come out even When reality is stark?”
--“Wonderful Remark” by Van Morrison
“And this bitter desert wind Will come ripping through your skin And everything that's calm will turn to madness And all of your fake tears Will come whirling down the years And what was kind and warm will come to sadness
And the sun and the moon Will come begging at your door The stars will turn to rust And drop from the skies And everybody will soon be asking you for more And everybody will be telling lies”
--“The Sun And The Moon” by the Pogues
“Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away Now it looks as though they're here to stay Oh I believe in Yesterday
Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be There's a shadow hanging over me Oh Yesterday came suddenly”
--“Yesterday” by the Beatles
“Your only rivers run cold These city lights They shine as silver and gold Dug from the night Your eyes as black as coal Walk on by Walk on through Walk 'til you run And don't look back For here I am
Carnival The wheels fly and the colors spin Through alcohol, Red wine that punctures the skin Face to face In a dry and waterless place”
--“The Unforgettable Fire” by U2

"Echoes of songs still lurk on distant foreign shores, Where we danced just to please the gods that only ask for more, So it goes But still we give ourselves to this We can't spend our lives waiting to live" - Rise Against, "The Dirt Whispered"
And pretty much all of The Beatles - Hey Jude. That's probably my favorite song.

DON MCLEAN. "American Pie" is, obviously, his most famous, but has anyone heard the rest of his stuff? "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)," in particular, is great songwriting. Same for "The Grave."

I love "American Pie." Did you hear about the thing in Grand Rapids, Michigan where a few thousand people sang "American Pie" because the city got named one of the top ten dying cities by some important website that I can't remember?

I could post page after page after page in this thread, but I'll try to contain myself. No promises though "And you think maybe you'll trust him For he's touched your perfect body with his mind." - Leonard Cohen, SuzanneLeonard Cohen generally is an amazing songwriter, but this is one of my favourite images. Chelsea Hotel No. 2 and Hallelujah are also great. "For what it's worth It was the sky on his shoulders Not the earth But Atlas just shrugged He's going back on the drugs Oh man I'm back on the drugs" - Holcombe Waller, Atlas ShruggedThis one deserves a video. Holcombe Waller is one of my favourite artists, and he deserves to be far more famous than he is. DON MCLEAN. "American Pie" is, obviously, his most famous, but has anyone heard the rest of his stuff? "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)," in particular, is great songwriting. Same for "The Grave." Vincent is one of my favourite songs. My dad used to sing it to me, along with Harry Chapin's Cats in the Cradle, when I was a kid. He's got a rather twisted sense of humour.

I suppose my ultimate favorite lyric is pretty obvious, right? The Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever (Always, no, sometimes think it's me/but you know I know when it's a dream/I think I know I mean, ah yes/but it's all wrong/that is, I think I disagree). I also could quote the entirety of Revolution, but I'll spare you.
Also! Lily Allen is my home-fucking-girl. The Fear (Life's about film stars and less about mothers/it's all about fast cars and cussing each other/But it doesn't matter 'cause I'm packing plastic/and that's what makes my life so fucking fantastic.), Him (Do you think He'd drive in his car without insurance?/ Now is He interesting or do you think He'd bore us?/ Do you think His favorite type of human's Caucasian?/ Do you reckon He's ever been done for tax evasion?// Do you think He's any good at remembering people's names?/ Do you think He's ever taken smack or cocaine?/ I don't imagine He's ever been suicidal/ His favorite band is Creedence Clearwater Revival.), and Everything's Just Wonderful, particularly.
Florence + the Machine, the Dixie Chicks, Mumford & Sons, and the Cardigans get special mention, because they all sound like poems. Particularly the Cardigans: I love Please Sister and You're the Storm (I'm an angel bored like hell/and you're a devil meaning well/ you steal my lines and you strike me down/come raise your flag upon me).
Not a day goes by without some version of the immortal line, "I bust in dudes' mouths like gushers, motherfucker," coming out of my mouth.

I have oh so many...most are from one song.
"One last perfect verse Is still the same old song Oh Christ, how I hate what I have become"
"Tuck me in beneath the blue Beneath the pain, beneath the rain Goodnight kiss for a child in time Swaying blade my lullaby"
"The morning dawned upon this altar Remains of the dark passion play Performed by his friends without shame Spitting on his grave as they came"
"Be still, my son You're home Oh when did you become so cold? The blade will keep on descending All you need is to feel my love Search for beauty, find your shore Try to save them all, bleed no more You have such oceans within In the end I will always love you" All from Nightwish's The Poet and the Pendulum.
"May my weary soul find release for a while At the moment of death I will smile" -And Then There Was Silence by Blind Guardian

"Hemingway never seemed to mind the banalities of a normal life and I find, it gets harder every time So he aimed the shotgun into the blue Placed his face in between the two and sighed, "Here's To Life!""Favorite section in Streetlight Manifesto's Here's To Life!
