So a long time ago in a distance land you read a really, really good book. But you can't remember what it was called or who wrote it! Try to describe it so we can see if others recognize it and help you find it.

It was a fantasy book that was set in a slightly technological fantasy world that was Irish-inspired. There was a run-in with a banshee. I remember the main character was a male, but his assistant was a creature of some kind.
I remember a particular scene where he needs to interrogate some recently deceased guy, so he buys this hood that lets him talk with the dead, he goes to the guy's body in the morgue, and insults his...um...shrinkage...in order to make him cooperate.

Read this book in year 8 English when every one else was doing Lord of the Flies and we were doing Sci-fi.
There's a nuclear holocaust but a girl survives because her house is in a valley. I strange man turns up with a protective suit and lives with the girl for a time. Then it appears he wants to kill her? And she ends up stealing the suit and getting the hell out of there. Yeahhh...
