You know how it is. Your friend's all, "There's nothing good to read, man, do you--" and you just hand them the book. "Keep it, I need a new copy anyway!"
For me, there's:
The Gift of Fear, Gavin de Becker Good Omens, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett Speak, Memory, Vladimir Nabokov Hogfather, Terry Pratchett

Mistborn, Brandon Sanderson. I feel like I've been recommending it left and right lately. Also, Battle Royale. The book's better than the movie. Trust me.

Depends on the person and what I know of their interests. For most of my friends just looking for something to read, anything by David Eddings. For my friends who are a little more like me (twisted), The Alienist by Caleb Carr or American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

Hah, awesome, you have Good Omens on your list too! My list:
PG Wodehouse in any form - Code of the Woosters in particular. Going Postal by Terry Pratchett Sabriel by Garth Nix (strictly speaking, Lirael would be the 'you need to read this now!' book, but as it's the second in a series...) Raffles the Amateur Cracksman by EW Hornung A Passage to India by EM Forster Maurice, also by Forster

A lot of my friends have very socialist political opinions and are very involved in political conversations so I hand them my copy of V For Vendetta for the sake of informing them about anarchism and whatnot, as the story is very politically based. I'm not sure if that counts, though, does it?
