I figure that this is a great topic for a literature board like this.
Albums that piece songs together to make a larger and most likely better story. Any favorites?
For me I would have to say: Leviathan - Mastodon(Moby Dick in loose album form) The Call of the Wretched Sea - Ahab(Moby Dick in strict album form) Fear of a Blank Planet - Porcupine Tree In Absentia - Porcupine Tree 2112 - Rush(Based of off Anthem with a nerd twist) Actually just any album by Mastodon is a great Concept Album. The last one they made(Crack the Skye) had such an epic and trippy story to it.

The Beatles, Sgt Pepper.
I can listen to that one for days and days.

I very much enjoy concept albums.
My favourites?
-The Wall (Pink Floyd) -Tommy (The Who) -Quadrophenia (also The Who) -Scenes from a Memory (Dream Theater) -Snow (Spock's Beard)
The group Rhapsody of Fire (formerly just Rhapsody) is big on concept and story-based stuff. As far as I know, each of their albums tells a part of a big storyline, but I never actually paid attention to what it was.

Yes yes yes! This album was one of the first I ever bought, and it made Pink Floyd one of my favourite bands. The sheer poetry of the lyrics and the coherency of the album as a whole are pretty incredible. "Day after day, love turns gray, like the skin on a dying man. Night after night, we pretend it's alright; but I have grown older, and you have grown colder, and nothing is very much fun anymore. And I can feel one of my turns coming on. I feel cold as a razorblade, tight as a torniquet, dry as a funeral drum..." Song starts at about 2:00. The video is from the film of the album starring Bob Geldof as Pink - it's haunting. Trigger warning for violence, language and blood.

starring Bob Geldof as Pink Fun fact! Bob Geldoff hated Pink Floyd. When he got the offer to play Pink in the movie, he was in a cab and he got all "Man, I don't like that band." It just so happened that the cab driver was Roger Waters's brother.

I love Green Day's American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. Sadly, they're the only two concept albums I've heard a lot, although I've been wanting to listen through Tommy (I've never actually listened to it in order).

I just love the lyricism and the brilliant melodies and repeated riffs.

Sufjan's Age of Adz album seems to have several underlying stories that weave together throughout the entire album, allowing for the final song to bring everything together. Beautiful.

I'd say either Blind Guardian's A Night at the Opera album or Avantasia's The Metal Opera (parts I and II).

Coheed and Cambria are really good for concept albums, considering all their albums fit in one concept. They even have an accompanying series of comics.
But, of course, they can't compare to The Wall. Definitely one of my favorites.

Also: Does anyone else first think of "Fool on the Hill" when this song starts off?
