From what I can tell, he was still using government aid. At some point, you need to move on and give other people a chance at that money.
But if I had a way to fund school myself year after year? "Hi, I'm Cyanea: Professional student".
Fuck yeah.

I detest how necessary loans are every year. Every time I fill out FAFSA, I remember my German host-mom-thing complaining because, GASP, next year it was going to cost her 500 euros/semester to send her son to college. She was so outraged, and asked for my opinion. At which point I nearly started crying... even though I was still two years away from taking out $8,000 in loans every year.
And this was my cheap option.

I don't like that they are necessary; I don't think that tuition should be so expensive and all the rest, but I guess that's not really the discussion at hand, so I'll just say yay, because there's no way I (or my siblings, or most of my friends/the people I know) could ever afford to go to uni without them.

We should all just go to Ireland. College is free there. Or, at least, it used to be.

WOOOO not thinking about this for another five months when I need to start paying them off... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH /panic I've decided to never leave school so I don't have to pay them off. My kids can do it for me. This just sounds incredibly douche-y. I know that you were probably being funny but still. I sure as hell am not liking paying for my education but I would hate to pay off my parents' loans along with it. Just thinking about it makes me want to punch someone. Not specifically you, though. As for loans, they are what they are. I am glad for what I have otherwise there would have been no way for me to pay for school besides working fulltime. I will owe about 20 grand when I graduate, a quarter of which I can probably pay off right away. I haven't thought about grad school but looking at the numbers it shouldn't be too bad unless I go out of state. And, of course, I am going into a career where the government ends up forgiving your loans after a certain amount of years.

Not gonna lie, teaching is one of the plans...but that would involve work. I was thinking something along the lines of...get suddenly rich.

I'm trying very hard to avoid loans. I'm staying in-state and getting a job on-campus. Plus I have a few scholarships, so hopefully "nay". Plus Florida universities are some of the cheapest.

I sure as hell am not liking paying for my education but I would hate to pay off my parents' loans along with it. Just thinking about it makes me want to punch someone. Not specifically you, though. Sigh. There really needs to be a sarcasm font. Of course that's not my intent. In fact, as I grew up with my power cut off nearly every month, my intent is to make sure my kids never ever lack anything they need. And that they go to college debt-free. I'm pretty determined to make this happen, and I'm working on career options that will help me with this goal. I am already thinking about college funds and such for my kids, and I won't be having them for another 3-4 years. However, right now I am facing no rent for the next three months, because student loans for fall don't come in until after the semester starts, in September (I know, so fucking useful). My boyfriend is on unemployment insurance, and I want him to find a job that he enjoys, so I'm encouraging him to look into trade school options rather than just immediately try to find any sort of job he can in a shitty economy. He may also have to take out student loans. I'm planning on us getting married in 2013, and at the rate we're going the wedding is going to have a reception at Chuck E Fucking Cheese's, though that may be a bit out of our budget. If my mom dies from the cancer coming back or any of the myriad things that could kill her (stress-related, most of them), then I have hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to pay off myself. So, you know, passing my debt onto my kids? May not be avoidable, unless I win the godsdamn lottery or live for a very long time. I'm not too optimistic on both (though I am optimistic on making good with my career plans, so that's something).

I'm sure if the federal government cut its defense budget in half and gave that half to the education budget we could all go to college for free. The U.S. spends so much money on its Department of Defense it's ridiculous.

Sigh. There really needs to be a sarcasm font. Agreement. Alas, the written word's inability to convey vocal cues!

They did invent a punctuation mark for sarcasm... actually, it was a Michigan company, which makes me happy.
I'm not sure what happened to it... but I really wish it had been widely implemented!

Sowwy? I was 95% sure that it was said in jest but it just inspired such ragey feelings in my heart.
