Do you have a favorite composer and if so, a favorite work?
My current favorite is Debussy and "La Mer".
A contemporary that I really like is Alexandre Desplat and his work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

I will not pretend to be well-versed in classical music, but I love Beethoven. I really, really do. I have a soft spot for Bach, too.
Contemporary-wise, I love Yann Tiersen, Ludovico Einaudi and Dario Marianelli.

VIVALDI <3 Also, Tchaikovsky's pretty bitchin'.
From soundtracks: Joe Hisaishi did the sound track for just about everything from Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki, and that's all gorgeous; John Barry did the soundtrack for the film Out of Africa, which was perfect for it.

I am by no means an expert on classical music, but I really love Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody 2.

Huge soft spot for Stravinsky, here. Also Berlioz and Vivaldi--those guys wrote some kickass bassoon parts (The Rite of Spring, Symphonie fantastique, and several concertos, respectively). As a former ballerina, I am contractually obligated to shout-out Tchaikovsky here as wells as Adam (Giselle!) and Delibes (Coppelia!). Seriously, though, The Rite of Spring, Coppelia, and Symphonie fantastique are the most bestest ever and y'all should be listening to them right now. (At the same time! YES.)
Question: are there any specific performances y'all prefer? I like to get recordings from symphonies that are the same nationality of the composer (e.g., Orchestre de Paris for Berlioz, Moscow Symphony for Stravinsky). Anyone else do something similar?

Anyone else do something similar? Yes, all the time. Although that being said, where possible I like to listen to recordings from the Montreal or Toronto Symphonies, those being my "local" orchestras and having heard them play so I'm familiar with their sound. But as for composers: I greatly enjoy playing Beethoven, Chopin, and Granados. Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Respighi, de Falla, and Ravel would be favourite composers to just sit and listen to. Very hard to pick a favourite work, of course ;D

I was in Venice recently, and went to a concert that was just four violinists sitting in one of the oldest churches in the city, playing four hours of Vivaldi to a crowd of about fifty. Probably the best concert I've ever been to, and the locale (and feeling that Vivaldi Himself could have sat in this church several centuries ago) definitely had a lot to do with that.

I've always loved Vivaldi. And for the last couple days I can't stop listening to Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor. Actually, er, I'm dating a composer and starting to think that I should probably brush up my knowledge of classical music.
As for modern composers: I definitely agree about Joe Hisaishi. Also, of course, John Williams and Hans Zimmer. And Yoshihisa Hirano, who has done quite a few OSTs for animes.

Dating a composer must be really awesome!
I've heard a little Stravinsky, but not enough to recognize any of his pieces, unfortunately. I love all the Chopin Nocturnes, and anything Tchiakovsky is uh-mazing. I have to be in a Beethoven and Vivaldi mood to like their compositions. I think it's because I overplayed them when I got into a huge classical music kick a few years ago, but I won't deny that they're amazing composers. I'm really digging Dvorak recently.
As for recent composers, I'll agree that Hans Zimmer has some great stuff. My favorite fun composition of his was "Spider Pig" for The Simpsons Movie.

My favourite composer who hasn't been mentioned yet is Mahler. Nobody does big feelings like Mahler. It's kind of exhausting, but I love it. I feel like he was just as revolutionary as Beethoven, in that he took the style of the day to the most dizzying heights possible, and left those who came after to find something else.

...that was really not a good explanation. IDK, the only person who can explain Mahler is Mahler.
