Is anyone a fan? Personally I love Lovecraft and the creepy atmospheres he paints, but I can see why his writing might not be appealing to everyone.
So how about it then? Any other Lovecraft fans or just horror lit in general? I would love some good suggestions of creepy things to read.

I've been wanting to read Lovecraft for a while now (every since they started pinching Lovecraftian-style monsters for Warcraft's Old Gods). Where is a good place to start?

I LOVE Lovecraft. I took a course on Science Fiction and fell upon Lovecraft, Bradbury, and Wells all at the same time. It was such a wonderful semester for me. I even have a leatherbound Necronomicon I picked up at a Waterstones in England.
cyanea: There are A LOT of compilations of his work, mainly because he wrote short stories during the pulp era. I'm sure any place you go to for books would have one. As far as specific stories go, I highly recommend "Herbert West- Reanimator", "The Whisper in the Darkness", and of course the classic "Call of Cthulu".

I second Herbert West as a good place to start. I adore Lovecraft's work, and while Call of Cthulhu is what he's best known for, it might not be the best way to jump into it. Then again, if you're after him because of WoW, maybe it is.
(You almost made me miss the game for a second there :-P )

It was probably because it was 3am and a car crash right outside my house

Starting with him is weird because you cant really find anything in book form that is a compilation. Thats because he wrote short stories for the most part. I just found a compilation that looked interesting to me and went with that. But if you dont want to spend money: www.hplovecraft.com/writings/fiction/Everything he ever wrote is online for free ^_^

Lovecraft is crazy good and I'm a huge fan. An ex boyfriend of mine introduced me to his work and ever since I've been in love. I actually did start out with Call of Cthulhu, though I can see how it would be a bit off-putting if you're not specifically looking for that sort of thing. I don't know how English majors generally feel about Stephen King but I'm a big fan. Moreso of his "classic" work, I guess, than his newer work.

His good stuff is really good. Some of the other stuff not so much... I am going to read Under the Dome eventually because I feel like I would enjoy that story.
