This was worth the entire read. I think Neutral Milk Hotel is a bit like Allen Ginsberg. This works in a couple ways. Stylistically — and they both get shit on for being too mainstream and for their status as penchant of the "poser" or otherwise novice in that particular field.

So, for fun, are there other authors you think have equivalents in modern music? I would say Kanye West is a bit like William Faulkner. Are you saying William Faulkner is a useless asshole?
