I'm curious. Have any armadillos here changed majors? Were you planning on perusing a different major before you became an English major? Were you an English major but decided it just wasn't for you? I'll be attending college in the fall. I actually plan on attending law school after I earn my bachelor's degree. Ha, I know that's the default excuse for English majors trying to appease their family. A major in English seems really appealing, but right now my declared major is international studies.

I'm also starting university in the fall; at the moment my program is human rights. I love literature (evidently), but for some reason I find the idea of being an English major a little bit daunting. That feeling has been lessening as of late, though, so we'll see... maybe a change will be in my future.

Well, I hadn't officially declared, but my main thought was that I'd be a meteorology major. Back in high school, I won a big award and scholarship for my work in weather. It's why I wound up at a science school.
After about a semester, I realized that meteorology was boring, and I hated it (even though I was good at it), and figured I'd try going with English because that was always my real passion. These days, I'm an English major and very happy about it.
But what's important was that it wasn't hard to make that change, especially when you've just started. At the very least, minor in English! The communication skills you'll gain are vital in every profession. And certainly don't sweat it.

I keep flip-flopping between being an English Lit. and Writing major and an English Communications major. Still not sure what the hell I'm doing yet :/

@lady Macbeth, I plan on doing an emphasis in humanitarianism. It's something I'm really passionate about and I would like to study international law, specifically law dealing with human right's issues. boringrocks, I've actually been thinking about an English minor. I also want to minor in peace studies and women's studies. Triple major, maybe? @lizzie, Good luck!

When I started college, I was under the impression that I would major in art and/or anthropology; I started as an Undeclared major. That quickly changed, as at my school, they "advised" me that I would have had to have started my art major immediately in order to graduate (that was a load of hooey). My archaeology class turned me off a bit to anthropology (I want to study cultures, not the bloody Australopithecus!). I was at a loss for awhile but eventually came across English and History, picking up my minor in Classical Studies and my concentration in medieval studies. I start my fifth year of university in the fall.
So...yes.

I change once a year, it seems. Started out as Chinese language. Took a couple of courses at my community college and transferred to a university. Found out that I'd have to basically restart Chinese at the university and spend an extra year there, so I switched to Asian Literature. The Asian Lit department was...underwhelming, so I changed to Comp Lit. I found it just as underwhelming and unhelpful (the major requires you to plan out for years in advance, yet they only give you the upcoming year's courselist? Really?) so now I'm just an English major.

I started college fall 2010 and I planned on going to nursing school. But as I was taking my general education credits, I realized the medical track wasn't for me. So, I changed my major to education. Then, during spring semester i finally changed my major to English. I just knew it was the one subject I was really interested in pursuing. So, here I am

Now I am a Literature major and a History major with a minor in Classical Studies. Right now I'm thinking my concentration is either going to be the Renaissance or Arthurian Literature.

Well, in the UK, we choose our 'major' before going/when we apply to uni, so even though I'm not at university yet, I've still had plenty of changes!
Originally, I was planning on pursuing something English/journalism/media-related. Then, I thought I'd quite like to be a surgeon. This meant that I had to effectively 're-take' my first year of college (sixth form/grade ten, I think?) and take science subjects. Then, I changed my mind again and thought I'd do psychology/philosophy. Then, I really, really wanted to do history, but I'm not taking it at A level, so I can't. That's when I came back around to English and I definitely could not be happier with my choice; it's definitely the right one for me. Depending on which university I end up at, I could be doing "English" (mainly lit, although there are language modules/options), or "English Literature and Language" (joint honours - half my degree has to be language, half lit).

It's like we're the same person.... I'm taking Arthurian Literature next spring, despite the fact that the professor terrifies me. She's a very intense woman. I need to decide what to do for my final study, though....

I started out as a music education/Japanese double major. Then I dropped the music ed and was just going to do Japanese. Then for a bit I waffled back and forth between Japanese and Asian studies and was going to major in one and minor in the other. Then I totally switched gears and decided to major in English. But then I dropped out, after that. :/ So I'm not technically an English major - but if I ever were to go back to school, I probably would be.

I was a Music major, but didn't make it through my school's audition process- I hadn't been taking voice lessons very long and wasn't prepared for the operatic Italian my school wanted. So I went with another of my loves- English.

I came into college undecided, but declared English with a minor in Secondary Ed during my sophomore year. Originally I was supposed to go to nursing school, but my heart wasn't in it. I graduated about a week ago and I'm so happy that I chose the right career path for me. The job hunt for teaching jobs right now, however, is haunting me and making me nauseous of what will happen over the upcoming summer months. Oy vey!

I changed to an English major from a Chem major, but realized it wasn't for me. Yep, that was a great decision.
