Have any of you read any books on the subject of writing that you absolutely have to share?
My favourite that I've read would have to be Stephen King's On Writing, I liked that it was part autobiography at the same time as being a book about writing. And it also didn't have those pointless exercises, which never seem to help me.

I liked On Writing as well.
As much as I hated Anne Lamott's Bird By Bird the first time I've read it, it's been a great book to revisit. On the surface, she just seems like an overly excited writer whose obsessed with her teeth and constantly hallucinating. And she is all those things. Still, the mental images she teachers are actually pretty helpful.

I guess this means I should read On Writing, since it keeps popping up. Someone brought it to writing group on Sunday, and now this.

If you're not a fan of Stephen King's writing style, it might not be as enjoyable. I'm not a huge fan, which is why I found myself skipping around a little the first time I read it.

He's OK, but not quite thrilling really. Anyway, On Writing is pretty good and not as dry as some other books on writing, like On Writing Well, or other such psedo-textbooks.

I've always loved Terry Brooks' Sometimes the Magic Works.

This isn't a book about writing, but the podcast Writing Excuses is fantastic for advice for genre writers.
