So, I will be taking AP English Lit next year, and I got the reading list today. I just wanted to get some outside opinions on a novel I will have to write a research paper on, and I have three choices: 1) The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan 2) The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain 3) The Color Purple by Alice Walker
Any thoughts?

The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
It's hilarious and controversial (some would say). Have fun.

I've never read The Joy Luck Club, but I've heard some good things. I vote that.

I haven't read the others, but I really, really enjoyed The Color Purple.
The movie was terrible, though. Don't watch the movie.

Amy Tan just becomes very predictable.

TJLC I don't really like because it's stereotype heaven and she's writing to what the audience expects from an Asian-American author.
That said I would pick the book that intrigues you the most because if your interest and passion is in it, then you're going to write better papers.
If they are all the same, Huck Finn gets my vote. You can do a lot with it.

You know you need to go to sleep when you read the title of this thread to the sound of "Friday".

The Joy Luck Club, definitely. It is an amazing book. Amy Tan makes me so proud to be Chinese.

I say read both Huck Finn AND The Joy Luck Club. I sincerely enjoyed both of them. However, if you're only going to read one, I have to vote for Huck Finn.

Well, read them all, obviously. That's the best way to make an informed decision. (Still throwing my vote in with Amy Tan for the paper, though.)
