But if it's oral literature, then it is literature. Literature's right there in the name. And I thought you said you weren't valuing one over the other? What's this talk of sub-branch? "Oral literature corresponds in the sphere of the spoken (oral) word to literature as literature operates in the domain of the written word" Okay so I used sub-branch instead of sphere. I'm having trouble comprehending the part in quotes.

Yeah, but I'm having trouble understanding what they're saying. My comprehension skills are a little shot today. I didn't get much sleep last night.

But they're both literature, yes?

But they're both literature, yes? Oral literature is a 'sphere' of literature.

Wait. So, if we're now saying that oral literature is a sphere of literature, that means that it is still literature. Which would mean that, to go back to the previous example, a Jay-Z song would be literature when it is performed, as well as when it it written down, yes?

I don't know...I'm hesitant to call spoken word literature. Not because I believe it's inferior, but because I believe it's a different form of storytelling altogether.
If I told you a story about how I ate waffles for breakfast, would that be considered literature, since it would be an oral story?

I think you might be working under the belief that literature is a high artistic form. Is that accurate of me to assume?

What if we worked under a loose assumption that there is bad and good literature (oral or not)? Or as you said higher and lower forms of oral literature?

Literature has to be written down.
Unless it's wine.
