Yeah, technically The Iliad is an epic poem. Not to mention, y'know, all that other poetry. Just the little people, like Pound and Eliot and Keats. No biggie. Can we move out of the canon, though, folks? How do we feel about, say, Tamora Pierce? Jacqueline Carey? I'm not sure if they "transcend the genre," but there are people (hello!) who love them.
