Can there be different types of literature? Like different kinds of tomatoes? This is opening a completely different and new can of worms. And I would say that there are and that they are called genres. So different types of tomatoes are different types of genre! Stop talking about tomatoes!

That's a poor example, since tomatoes are fruits. Again, it depends who you are talking to. In 1893, the US Supreme Court ruled that tomatoes are vegetables. However, in 2001, the Council of the European Union declared that tomatoes are fruits. See? Things can exist can be defined arbitrarily. But what I'm getting at is tomatoes aren't defined arbitrarily haha. One who says tomatoes are vegetables is one who is incorrect. I'm not clear on the exact thoughts behind the Supreme Court ruling or the European Unions decision, but they can't trump biological fact, which is that tomatoes are fruits.

I am simultaneously giggling and bouncing in my chair with utter glee and I can't decide if it's because this thread is so entertaining, or because I like fucking with people.... Fuck you Cat, I will not be able to sleep tonight because of this. You just had to tell me to check out this thread. But thank you, it has challenged me to think when I didn't want to. As a Bio minor, I am thoroughly amused by this tomato talk, but it has to stop.

Then literature has no definition? If you want an "official" definition, and it seems that you do, then just read the OED's interpretation of it. I'm not looking for an "official definition," whatever that means. I don't actually believe in one, just because I've participated in discussions like this before and no definition seems satisfying enough.

I suppose we will just have to agree to disagree on this one caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=US&vol=149&invol=304(If you're interested in the Supreme Court's ruling.)

But if you're not going to believe in it, what the point of arguing for it?!

But if you're not going to believe in it, what the point of arguing for it?! To present a non-biased viewpoint?

I said I don't believe in it, not that I'd never believe in it. I mean, there's a feeling I get when I read and study. I think that feeling has to come from somewhere, so I actively seek out a definition, although I'm not sure if there is one. Since I haven't found one yet, I don't believe there's such a thing as literature.

But if you're not going to believe in it, what the point of arguing for it?! He is allowed to argue its nonexistence if we can its existence.

Okay, this may not be my view point, but just to make ya'all forget the damn tomatoes:
Literature are the novels that transcend the genre? (don't shoot me)
