Hi everyone! My name is Jessica and I live in Australia. I'm 22 but still technically in 1st year at university. I never finished high school and did lots of random stuff, going to TAFE which is sort of like community college in the US, I guess? Anyway, when I was 21 I got to take a tertiary test and go to university. For the first year I was in Visual Arts and since I enjoyed Art History the most I transferred to a new uni and BA. I decided to double major in European Studies and English. I'm not sure what I'll do with this degree. I'm split between a second bachelor in Animation or a masters in Medieval History. My username is from Romeo and Juliet which seems not to be a favourite but I love Shakespeare. When my Grandfather died I received an ancient leather bound complete collection with yellowing bible type paper. Ahh love it! My username is also my Tumblr - feel free to follow me and I'll follow back! The books that changed my life are Tamora Pierce's Tortall series, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody, Great Expectations and The Hobbit. And one play: Hamlet. It's nice to meet everyone! It's interesting reading about American college, it's very different to Australia. Are essays (papers) really set by page limit? All of ours have word counts like 1000 or 2500 instead! I can't imagine writing to a page count.

I LOVE Stargirl! I've been meaning to re-read it for years; I really must. Welcome And I think most essays (at a college/university level) are set by word-count. Although, I guess if there's a standard format, then it amounts to the same as a page count.

In the US, papers are assigned by word count, yeah. In some rare cases, like with my Irish professor last semester, they will assign word counts instead.
Welcome to the FYEMA boards! The Tortall books are a good influence, I think, so I'm glad those affected you so strongly, rather than, say...Twilight.

I'm in Canada, but as far as papers go, it's entirely up to the prof. Most profs will assign both a word and page count, but they almost always correlate. There's no difference if a prof asks for 1,500 words or 6 pages, because they end up being about the same!

Ahhh fair enough. Just reading all the memes on the tumblr mentioning page count only confused me. Fuck Yeah Dion: Very cool! Where are you staying?
