Does anyone do this? I assume there are a few of you, since we have so many writers among us.
This is the only type of roleplaying that I really do. I don't like LARPing (too expensive), dice games have too much math for me, the other board-like games are boring. Forum-based for me is what is best, most entertaining, and keeps my mind and writing skills active.
That being said, who all does this? Who are your favourite characters that you've created and what genres do you enjoy doing best?

SQUEE!
Okay, sorry about that.
I love it. It's my favorite thing to do, apart from writing. It's almost the same as creating a story, though. You can still get lost in a fictional world.
As for genres, we roleplayed forever on Warriors (a book series about cats) based sites, then evolved to humans, over the course of four years. Right now we're on a site that's set in the future, and what's especially fun is that the time period is advanced to be messing with DNA- as in, create human-animal hybrids. Then there are the workers whose job it is to control them, but that never works. We roleplay both "purebreeds" and "hybrids." The goal is to eventually start a hybrid revolution.
Well actually we did that already, but then we wiped the site and started over, with fresh plots. I keep forgetting things.
It's just... I can spend hours doing it. A bit sad, maybe, but I can get lost in it.

I know exactly what you mean. I love going in genres but (somewhat ironically?) my favourite genre to roleplay in is science fiction. Why ironic? Because I hate reading that genre. I like fantasy, too, but that usually involves magic and it tends to get boring with uber!powerful characters pretty quickly. My favourite roleplay I've done was a post-WWII AU. Basically, the US lost and the territory was split up amongst the Japanese, Russians, and Germans. There are still outposts of US guerillas fighting about, but it was magnificent to RP in. I usually did a US fighter with my co-RPer doing a Russian character (female and male respectively).

I'm not big on forum roleplay. Don't get me wrong, it looks like a lot of fun, but I prefer to keep things small. I've played a couple card-based games, instant messenger RPs, nothing all that fancy or expensive.

There was a good three years of my life that I lived on forum-based roleplaying. I still do, but I'm too entrenched in my old forum that's been slowly dying (it was never big to begin with, just a friend's forum where we all recruited our friends to join).
I kind of roleplay anything. Fandom, original, just about anything. Usually slash, though. Het just never seemed to really work out that well.
To give you an idea of how much of my life I spent on this forum, my post count is currently 26.11% of all the total posts on the forum. 76,159 out of 291,636 posts is kind of extreme. The forum's been around since 07, but it's been almost dead for just about two years now. -slinks away-
