When I was little, my mom would turn on The Next Generation every week. My brother and I would watch the first half hour or so before bed time, and my poor mother always ended up missing the last half of the episode as she struggle to put us to bed!
I didn't accept my Trekkie status until college where I found Voyager on youtube. Now I currently have both series on DVD and have been reading the recent novels as well.
Besides The Next Generation and Voyager, there are three other series for a total of five. The first one, which most Trekkies/people call The Original had Kirk, Bones and Spock. Then there's Deep Space Nine (fans of which are called Niners) and finally Enterprise. The franchise also has 11 movies and a 12th on the way.
What is your favorite series or character?

I absolutely adore Deep Space Nine. It's soooo think and deep and awesome and amazing. I mean, in a way, I love them all. But Deep Space Nine is incredible.
I wrote a paper on TOS/TNG and feminism. It was like, 20 pages and awesome. And I also wrote a paper on TOS for a cultural studies class.

I don't really have a favourite series, though TOS (and the new re-boot of it) rates high up there for slashy goodness. Really, though, my favourite series is whichever one I happen to be watching at the moment. So currently, it's Voyager.
Fave character? I love B'Elanna. Because she's...me.
Yeah, I'm half-Klingon.

Haha, yes I remember how surprised to find TNG stuff on JSTOR and it was related to feminism if I remember correctly. What did you write your feminism paper about? I always loved how TNG claimed to be past being sexist, but only allowed ONE strong female character per episode. Troi and Crusher had to take turns! Or sometimes the strong female would be a guest star and both of the regulars faded to the background for the episode... No wonder I prefer VOY - there's at least two if not three strong female characters right of the bat. And B'Elanna is my favorite character as well (closely followed by Janeway) and for a similar reason. I'm not exactly half-Klingon but I do have two distinct and different pulls on my life right now.

I can take Star Trek in small doses.
The optimism/utopia angle gets...frustrating after a while.

I totally feel you about Voy having more strong female characters. That's what made me choose to watch it first when I decided to actually sit down this year and watch each series front to back. (I may not get through every series this year as I work and go to school fulltime, but I'm going to try.) And yay! Another fan of B'Elanna! I loved her from the very first episode. I also really liked Kes and I'm kind of upset with how they got rid of her...it was almost as if they were like "Ooop, got 7 of 9 now! Better get rid of one of these strong female characters or the men might feel threatened!" Very annoying. I think both Kes and 7 could have had a place in the show. /fangirl ranting.

They were going to kill of Harry, but Garret Wang happened to be ranked as one of the sexier actors that year so they moved over to Kes. Both characters had problems, but I didn't see why one arrival meant one departure, but in real life it probably had to do with money.

Well I guess I'm happier with Harry staying on, and not just because I like some attractive man-candy in my shows. I really like the bromance between Tom and Harry, and I think the show would be incomplete without it. /shrug. Still would have loved it if they could have kept Kes, but eh. Whatchoo gonna do.

Oh Voyager. You had so much potential...
It was such an awesome premise: "Take part of a utopian civilization and throw them out in the middle of everything that's not and see them struggle to maintain their morals and beliefs". Unfortunately, the "Big Reset Button" at the end of every episode killed it for me (you know it's ridiculous when they actually lampshade it in an episode...)
The focus on Seven also bugged me, both for the reasons mentioned above as well as it took time away from more interesting characters and plotlines because they weren't Boobs in Spandex. For example, the merging of the Starfleet and Maquis crews was plastered over WAY too quickly. You stick my sister and I in a room together for a few hours and we'll kill each other...you stick Starfleet and Maquis together on a ship for years and it's all peace and love?
