I've taken all the mythology courses at my college (Greek, Norse and Egyptian) and I'm always looking for more stuff to read about myths. It's just so fascinating, seeing how each culture saw the world, and how similar so many of their stories are. It's almost enough to make the Collective Unconscious seem plausible. XP
To get in on the Odin debate, I want to like the guy, but he honestly seems like kind of a dick. He'll turn on his own worshipers in a heartbeat, he tricks woman into sleeping with him (and then tells men not to trust them in the Havamal) and he insults his own son who had just spent all day killing giants to protect Asgard in the guise of a ferryman and refuses to let Thor cross the river.

But anyway, Mythology: Does anyone know of any collections of Egyptian mythologies? I feel like everyone knows at least one Egyptian god, but even I myself lack any major knowledge regarding the lore surrounding them. Now that you speak of it, reading up on Egyptian mythology and mythology in general is going to be my personal mission, though I'm starting to get too many of those... :/ At least I got graduation money so I can buy what I need to learn. Who's usually an asshole in mythology, or Dionysus? Whose followers slaughter and eat people. The only thing that Hades can really be blamed for is kidnapping/raping Persephone. But at least he married her and made her a Queen of the Underworld, which cannot be said for the rest of the male gods!! And to defend Rick Riordan, Hades wasn't a villain in Percy Jackson books, he actually helps them out and helps them figure out part of the mystery. However, on the other hand Riordan pissed me off when he made Athena one of the mother goddesses. When anyone who knows anything about Greek mythology knows that she's one of the Three Virgin Goddesses. Although, I guess he needed a strong female goddess character, and when I think about Athena is one of the better choices. But I think he could have picked like Demeter instead. Since she's one of the best examples of what a mother is capable of when her child is hurt. |

Yes, he's the god of death and hell and all that unpleasantness, He's not the god of death, he's the god of the dead. As in, he's the one who manages all the shades of the Greek afterlife. The Greek god of death is Thanatos, who never gets any attention. As for everything else listed/stated on here...I...I can't. There are a lot of inaccuracies and poor analysis. My mythology hurts. It feels like I just had to suffer through the thrice-damned Thor movie again. |
