I actually hate musicals. Chicago and Dr. Horrible are the only exceptions.
Because really, neither Chicago nor Joss Whedon can do no wrong.

I understand your distaste for musicals Personally, I don't like a lot of them...terribly unrealistic for everyone to suddenly burst into song and dance together...but at the same time I really do appreciate the message a lot of them bring. Hairspray in particular was emotional for me.

I love musicals with a burning passion. My school is doing Footloose next fall, and I really want to audition but the rehearsals are going to conflict with field hockey, and it makes me really sad because I LOVE FOOTLOOSE SO MUCH. Some of my other favorites are: - Anything Goes
- Kiss Me Kate
- 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
- Rent
- The Secret Garden
- Thoroughly Modern Millie
- Hairspray
- West Side Story
- Cats
- Crazy for You
- Guys and Dolls
- Hello Dolly
- Mamma Mia
- How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
- White Christmas
- Music Man
- Into the Woods
I'll stop here, because I honestly could go on forever listing my favorite musicals.

My mother raised me on musicals. I can name a song from pretty much anything if it starred Gene Kelly, and a wide variety of anything else. I used to despise the fact I've seen so many, but I couldn't be happier looking back.

I am such a huge fan of musicals, but I'll put my short "favorites" list here:
- Cats - Phantom of the Opera - Into the Woods - Wicked - Hairspray - West Side Story - Les Mis - Rent - Rocky Horror Picture Show - Wizard of Oz
I participated in musicals during my middle school and high school years as well. I wish I could have supported/participated in musicals during college but I didn't have enough spare time to do so! :-(

DR. HORRIBLE! MY FAVORITE... Also, I like almost every musical, you know? Sometimes they don't have the best songs, but they're always so animated, and more engaging than regular plays, you know?

Don't make me pick a favorite! All the others would feel left out. They may be unrealistic, but I like to think that everyone needs a little spectacle now and then. Also, music heightens the emotions, raises the stakes. A character only bursts into song when their emotions are too big to be expressed any other way, whether that emotion is joy, rage, love, despair, or grief. I also love lyrics. Nothing makes my day brighter than hearing a really well crafted song lyric: one that fits the melody, rhythm, and rhyme, but also is witty or poignant. I have found that some of the lightest, fluffiest musicals often have the best lyrics, including a reference to classical Greek Mythology in Shrek the Musical (Donkey's song "Don't Let Me Go"), or this perfectly worded line from "Colors of the Wind", in Disney's Pocahontas "You can own the Earth and still all you own is earth until you can paint with all the colors of the wind." I have rhapsodized on long enough. I'll stop now.

LISTEN TO ANYTHING BY COLE PORTER. Sorry. I just love Cole Porter so much. I recommend the song Brush Up Your Shakespeare, from the musical Kiss Me Kate. In the musical, the song is sung by two gangsters, and the lyrics and accents are hilarious. I also feel it might apply nicely to many people on this board.

I ADORE COLE. "You're the Top" might be my favorite, just because of all the great rhymes. If you are a fan, I suggest watching the movie De Lovely, if you haven't already.
