I like marking up and dog-earring my textbooks and school readings, but I really like keeping my books brand new the first time I read them for pleasure. During re-reads, if they're paperbacks, I'll gladly mark 'em up.

When I was a sophomore in high school, my English teacher handed out this essay: www.tnellen.com/cybereng/adler.htmlAll of my books are dogeared and most of them have underlined passages. My favorite books have just about as much of my writing in them as the author's!

I could never dog-ear, oh my god. Especially not library books, because other people are going to read those! It depends on the book, but I will break the spines of paperbacks. Not so much with the hardcovers. I can't stand bookmarks for some reason, they just freaking annoy me. I will either lay the book down, open to where I left off, or just close the book. It doesn't take a lot of effort to flip through and find where you were last. I will highlight/underline/notate in novels for classes, but not with large, new textbooks. I have dropped a couple books in the bath, and quite a few have food on them.

I have dropped a couple books in the bath I'm glad, no, ecstatic to learn that I am not the only one! I always felt like I was the only one who did things like that.

Something else in common! I don't think I got new books either.

I don't dog-ear, because I have slight OCD when it comes to books and they must be perfect. But I adore old books that have been marked and dog-eared. I feel like I'm holding a piece of history. I top it off by smelling them too. Is that weird?

That's okay, if old book scent was a perfume I'd wear it.
