I'm not the first person to have said this one, but "your" and "you're" being confused drives me nuts, as does "its" and "it's". The apostrophe may not seem like much, but it changes the meaning of the word completely! I hate when people don't bother to use them correctly or fix them if they make an error....it gives the impression that they don't really care about what they're saying!

I'll forgive it if it's a very hasty draft, a text, a facebook message, whatever. But if it's something that you know more than one other person is going to look at, for the love of god pay attention. I had a fellow English major turn in a story for a class, and when I read it, he used the wrong its every. single. time. About a week later, he applied for a job at our writing center. I nearly cried. But, apparently, he didn't get it. And I didn't even have to intervene!

As an alternate question, do you correct the grammar of other people? I know it can be rude, but sometimes I just can't stop myself! That all depends on how annoying I find it. Small things, I'm willing to let go, but anything that's either exceptionally bad or on my list will be corrected.

I generally don't. I grit my teeth and go on with my life...except when it's friends. I do it just to annoy them (all in good fun, of course)

"lol" IS NOT A PUNCTUATION MARK.

"lol" IS NOT A PUNCTUATION MARK. I AGREE WITH THIS. It also doesn't need to end. every. sentence.

"Hence why..."
That one really, really pains me. I have to try quite hard to stop myself correcting it (I used to correct everyone, but it's never been well-received, so I just gave up).

My biggest pet peeve is that no one makes the effort to learn how to spell "definitely." It was once a problem word for me, too, so I made myself learn it. When I write it, I pronounce it in my head the way it's supposed to be spelled, making sure to emphasize that second i.
Other than that, any grammatical or spelling mistake that makes writing difficult to comprehend can annoy me a bit, which is usually just the they're/there/their or it/it's problem.

Small things, I'm willing to let go, but anything that's either exceptionally bad or on my list will be corrected. For me, it depends on what the consequences are for the correction. For example, if it will interrupt a decent conversation, I won't. If it will interrupt a dull conversation, I will (if only because the ensuing argument will be more interesting). Also, if it's on a sign or poster and I happen to have a Sharpie... Well, let's put it this way: All rules are off.

I do this ALL THE TIME. At my old job, whenever they had to hang a sign up or whatever and I was on shift, they'd have me look at it first rather than wait for me to grade them later.

At my school, there was a sign in the bathroom that said 'please clean up, blah blah blah others do not want to be affected by your uncleanliness' and someone actually changed it to 'effected'. I nearly had a fit laughing.
