Do you let your friends read your stories, even if they're unedited/unfinished? Or do you let no one but yourself and your beta read them until they're polished?

If it's a massive piece, a real one that I care about, I'll slave over it horribly alone for far to long, either until I let a particular friend read it or a class deadline appears.
However, lately I've gotten into the habit of putting something in my writing blog queue within the hour of starting it. They're really short, and not very serious, but there's something kind of... freeing, about making a bit of writing public without thinking too hard about it. Especially because I haven't gotten any negative feedback (yet... although I don't know if that's just because no one is reading it closely or... meh!).

I have a friend whom I 'met' online when I was like, twelve, through a fan-fic site and I ALWAYS let her read my things (and vice versa). Similarly, I have one other friend (whom I know 'in real life', too) who often reads my things, but generally, I read them and that's it. The only thing I've let other people read is my NaNo novella (from 2009); my mum read it and my psychology teacher and I gave it to both English teachers I had. I didn't really get great feedback (in the sense it wasn't that useful/constructive or I didn't get any at all) from the teachers, but my mum loved it x)

Depends. Like Olive said, if it's a long piece I really care about, I typically keep it to myself until I've got a workshop class or something I can send it to. A lot of my flash fiction gets posted to Tumblr immediately. My scripts/screenplays/novels-in-progress are read by my writing circle, made up of myself, a screenwriter, and a poet.

I usually only write when it's an assigned essay in class. I hate my writing, so I only let my teacher read it, and that's only because if I didn't turn it in, I would get a zero. If I get a good enough grade I will sometimes CONSIDER letting a family member read an essay, even though they usually criticize it to the point of me never wanting to write again anyway.

My mom is my most avid reader, and my best critic. She will always be honest with me.
Several of my friends have read half of my novel, but I need to rewrite it and now they are forming an angry mob, complete with pitchforks and torches, because I was so cruel to cut them off mid-story.
As for my published works, I have no idea who reads those. Honestly, who buys poetry?

I always wonder that when I get something published. Who the fuck is reading this? Is there really anyone who's keeping up with this tiny ass Southern e-zine, or this new microfiction blog?

I have a couple of friends whom I like to have read my shorter stuff (my poetry, mainly), but I hate letting my mom see anything I've written. I wrote a crown of sonnets from the point of view of a prostitute this past semester, and of course my professor had to tell my mom ALL ABOUT IT. And then she wanted to read it. And it has fairly explicit sexual details in it. And it was painfully awkward. Oh goodness, getting goosebumps just remembering.

I can't imagine my mom reading my writing.

I don't mind my mom reading about sexual stuff. I mind sharing anything about BDSM with her, because that's the one area that we just can't see eye to eye on. (Metaphorically speaking; she's 6 inches shorter than I.)
But, my mom and I are pretty much BFFs who stay up all night and get tipsy and giggle about our sexual escapades. (Well, minus the getting tipsy these days; I'm in recovery.)

I have one online friend who I let read my stories because she always has insightful advice and asks questions that make me think about the characterizations. I also show my boyfriend. xD

I could never show a girlfriend my writing either. 95% of the time, they think the male character is meant to be me, and the female character is meant to be them. Since I write a lot of characters in turbulent relationships, they always assume I'm unhappy just because my character is.

I can't imagine my mom reading my writing. Same. Of course, my mom and I are polar opposites and can't agree on anything ever, so that's a big part of it. Plus, she's really good at assuming that my every waking thought involves her, so she reads herself into a lot of stories where she doesn't belong. It leads to a lot of completely irrelevant fights. Not to mention, when she did actually make a one-line appearance in a story I wrote my freshman year of high school (which I didn't show her, but it nearly got published outside of the school stuff, so she saw it eventually), she was just... hurt. She's also not a reader (other than the spiritual guidance/self help stuff), so that's another issue... /rant about mother. Sorry.

Augh, I hate when that happens Dx Thankfully, I taught my boyfriend a lot about my characters before I ever showed him anything I wrote. So he knows who's who and is just as good for insight

My boyfriend and my father. I love how my father asks me for copies of my writing to show off to his coworkers.
