I read the first three books in the series, and honestly I neither loved nor hated them. They were interesting, but they weren't something I'd rave about. Then the movies started coming up and people went NUTS over the series: "OH MY GOD HARRY POTTER! I LOVE HARRY POTTER! J.K. ROWLING IS THE BEST AUTHOR EVER! OH MY GOD! HARRY POTTER!" Major turn-off. I haven't read any books in the series since, and I don't get excited for the movies. I'll go see them, but I don't mind waiting until they've been out for awhile. In my opinion, movies make people go crazy, and that's what ruins the series for other people.

As someone who is a Potter fan, I couldn't understand how someone could dislike the books! I purposefully declined to reply to the thread when I originally read it. Since then, I can totally understand. I met a Doctor Who fan at work the other day and got stuck working with her for the entire night. When she found out I was a fan she nearly broke my hand as she high-fived it. Now, I like my Who. But there is no reason why she had to talk and geek about it the. entire. night. I am really sorry that the obsessive fans have ruined HP for some of you, and I apologize. Keep on disliking and hatin'.

It was the books. The fanbase just made it worse.

I feel that I am going to get crap for my Vonnegut thread, but not everyone likes the same thing. I respect it!

Yeah, I'm not planning on saying that on the Vonnegut thread.

By the way, is Doctor Who any good? Like, is it actually a good TV show (whatever that means)? House and The Big Bang Theory are the only shows I really watch on TV right now.
*waits for Lobster to yell at me for going off topic*

I mean, you have to enjoy the super-cheese effect and have patience for low-budget tech (the Sonic Screwdriver is a laser-pointer that buzzes and the spaceship is a blue police call box that makes whooshing noises as it fades in or out of a destination), but it's a highly enjoyable experience with an abundance of references to joke about and a variety of loveable characters.

I'd consider myself a Harry Potter fan, but one that has outgrown it. I'll still continue watching the movies and be interested in things that come out... but really? It's definitely just children's literature. It does have a lot of layers and she put a lot of effort into creating a really rich world. She uses a lot of mythology. I think it's really good for children compared to the other "children's literature" out there and helps them advance their reading skills and gain sophistication in order to jump to more adult books. The books are almost written in a way that's less condescending than other books, which allows children of all ages to enjoy it more. The fun and fantasticalness tone is nice. People goofing off about it is fun. But some grown-ups take it far too seriously.
