I am a huge fan of the book as an object, something to admire as a thing of beauty apart from its literary content. Today, my friend Julian lent me this seemingly ancient copy of a Jules Verne classic, further solidifying my wishes to nickname him Jules. Besides this beautiful cover (yes, I gave it a bit of a photo shoot, background and all), opening the books reveals leaves upon leaves of that musk that so arouses us. The kind Chronos himself must wear when he has a night out on the town.

I like new books, especially paperbacks.
I love that feeling of the spine cracking for the first time as you open it.

Oh wow, both of those pictures made me gasp with joy. I found a box of old books in the media department at my school and, after asking my teacher, they turned out to be his. I asked to borrow 20,000 Leagues and he just gave it to me to keep It's relatively young, at only 24 years old, but it's one of my prized books.

I have an old book that I got for free from my high school library (they were giving away all the books they'd withdrawn from the shelves and I made off like a thief, of course, I had my backpack and several grocery bags stuffed full). The copyright page is missing (or it was never there) but a little bit of research told me it's possibly as old as 1808, when it was published, though we're thinking it's more from the early 1900's. Cover Title page and condition of the spine Title page Sample page It's the most fantastic-smelling book. It's Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb. Adaptations of many of Shakespeare's plays into prose form. It's an awesome little book. Here's the wiki page on it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_from_ShakespeareSorry for all this, I just love this book and thought maybe somebody might be able to tell me more about it. :/

I love that feeling of the spine cracking for the first time as you open it. That sound is both sickening and delicious. There's some kind of paper that books are printed on. I've no idea what, and it's not all books, but it makes me nauseous whenever I smell it. Am I the only one? I couldn't read Mists of Avalon because the paper kept making me ill.

I have a few of those on my shelves and they've barely been opened.
