Does anyone play Roleplaying games on here? I'm referring to tabletop paper and pencil RPGs such as Dungeons and Dragons, Shadowrun, Earthdawn, World of Darkness and such. I am curious if any fellow English Majors have ran games for their friends. We have such a heavy exposure to stories and many English Majors are into telling stories that it would make sense to me that tabletop RPGs would be a big hit.

I have friends who play and, being a proud con-going nerd myself, I've always intended to give it a go sometime....but I've never had the chance!

W:F, V:M for World of Darkness, and D&D since I was...9, probably.

I've been playing D&D on and off for a few years now. That started to fade, however, when we discovered the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG. It's so much fun, as an English major/Lovecraft fan!
Of course, the my schedule makes it really hard to find enough time to get together, so I'm afraid the last group we had fell apart after 4 or 5 sessions. Ah well, at least I got to kill someone. /evilKeeperlady

I could imagine the Call of Cthulu one being pretty darn sweet, definitely is one I'll have to give a go at some point. There is one called Ironclaw out that I found quite amusing. It's about anthropomorphic animals. The prefab adventure that is in the book makes the game sound like The Canterbury Tales, which gave me a good laugh. Alexi, have you ever tried a cross module system with WoD? I am in the process of trying to write a game that encompasses Werewolf, Vampire, Hunter and Mage, but I'm not sure if there will be any balance issues or not

Plenty of D&D and a few GM-invented systems. Have to say, playing a Changeling? So fucking awesome.

I haven't looked at the Changeling book yet, though the little blurb I've read about it makes it sound like a sweet concept. It's sad that so many people play predominantly D&D. It's not even a good system

Yeah, I know that. I started on D&D. as did basically everyone I know. I've just found that as a system it doesn't tell the story how I want. It's not brutal enough.
And it's heavily associated with R. A. Salvatore. I am not terribly fond of his works.

I played D&D for the first time the last week of my senior year of high school in my Econ class. I was instantly hooked on the freedom of my imagination and was going out of control with my character, but the one friend I had that played them went off to college shortly after. I had only played twice before he left, so I don't know anyone else around here that plays them. I'm pretty much SOL which sucks because it seemed so fun.

Am I allowed to pretend that written roleplaying in which you post on a site (actually, we use a proboards site like this one!) counts?
I love making my characters and roleplaying them out. I do it for hours. Sometimes the characters are based off story characters, other times they are completely new characters, and sometimes the new characters end up in stories.

I think that counts? As long as you roleplay I think it's fair game. We draw the line at bedroom foreplay though. That one definitely does not count in the discussion of the thread.

I've personally always wanted to try D&D but I don't know anyone in my area who plays the game. I do believe that there was a club designed specifically for roleplaying games on my campus, but since I've graduated, that choice has diminished.

And it's heavily associated with R. A. Salvatore. I am not terribly fond of his works. I have somehow managed to go a lifetime of fantasy-fangirling without reading Salvatore. I like to think there's a reason for this. Also, I find that the storytelling of the game has more to do with the GM than the game itself -- I've played a fairly wide range, from hacker to political, within the D&D system. Personally, I enjoy the political aspects most -- easier to get into, since it isn't so much about the dice as about the bullshitting (read as: speaking in-character) ability.
