Here's a hot topic, folks, and one that's bound to get some of our panties (or boxers, whatever your underwear of choice is) in a twist. Thoughts on gender identity? What is your gender, as opposed to your sex? (I'll be getting a poll up ASAP...) [Edit: Poll is up and running!] For the sake of topical sensitivity, I would very much appreciate the use of gender-neutral pronouns (ze/hir) in this thread*. A transgender person, for example, for whom you are uncertain of the proper pronoun to use is no more a plural (they) than ze is an inanimate object (it). To review: objective pronouns = he, she, ze subjective pronouns = his, her, hir*This Is Not the Thread in Which to Discuss Pronouns. That Thread is Here: fyemarmadillo.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=grammar&action=display&thread=118

I'm am a female and I identify as a female. I am straight, but I do find some women attractive, not enough to question my sexuality though, or to doubt it.

Hm... should we make a separate thread for sexuality? Honestly, it's an entirely separate issue than gender identity. It bothers me when people assume that they're interchangeable. ... That's it. I'm making the thread. I AM ON A ROLL WITH THE THREAD-MAKING.

Cissexual genderqueer femme.
I have baby-carrier reproductive equipment and puberty-developed mammaries. I have no intentions of getting surgery or hormone therapy to change any of this. (That's the cissexual.)
I'm not entirely sure if I'm non-binary or binary-fluid, but I know I like fucking around with gender roles regardless, so I'm genderqueer. Sometimes I'm male, sometimes I'm female, and sometimes I'm neither. On days when I'm male, I feel some body dysphoria -- it never used to be serious, but recently my breasts grew a cup size and now I'm having some serious depression and self-esteem issues surrounding this (that rollercoaster between "happy" and "really upset", depending on which end of the spectrum I am).
I'm always femme, regardless my gender presentation. So if I bind I'm likely to wear a dress and makeup.
I prefer female pronouns. I don't feel misgendered if you use neutral pronouns for me, and probably won't correct you. If you use male pronouns for me by mistake, I'll correct you politely; if you continue to use the pronouns I will fucksnap. If you call me butch, I will not be too polite about the correction.

Because I love learning, and I'm getting a little confused which is making me feel ignorant, I'm gonna ask what cisgendered and cissexual mean, because I haven't heard these terms before. And we had a whole section of my health class in college devoted to gender identity.

From The Really Awesome Trans Glossary: Basically if you're FAAB/CAFAB (female-assigned-at-birth/coercively-assigned-female-at-birth) and you identify as female, you're cisgender and cissexual. If you're CAFAB and you don't identify as female but you have no plans to transition, you're cissexual, but not cisgender. Cis just means the opposite of trans, basically.

Oh labels, how I hate thee. I once got caught in the crossfire of an argument about labels between my mom and her then-partner. Trust me, nothing is scarier than a pair of menopausal lesbians going at it over gay rights issues. SO SCARY. (I am allowed to make comments like this because I grew up with it and it was REALLY FUCKING SCARY.) But yeah. Labels. I hate them. I will never call you "butch," and I will never call you "femme." I will call you "you" and by whatever third-person pronoun you prefer, and accept anything about you that you choose to reveal to me. I make a concerted effort not to make assumptions based on stereotypes, and politely correct others when they do. That cool with you?

Male, MOSTLY identify as female.
I feel more comfortable being referred to as female, and thankfully my friends oblige. I'm Chelsea not Brian to most of them. I crossdress on occasion. I've no urge to transition because of...the way I feel about THE surgery. That's complicated too.
I have body dysphoria sometimes. My lack of breasts has reduced me to tears before.

I am female by sex and female by gender orientation, but the constant interchanging of the words annoys the crap out of me. As I stated before on the grammar board, "Sex asks the specifics of your genitals and gender asks how you identify within social constructs". I had never heard the terms cisgender or cissexual until now and I honestly really like them. I am upset that we never talked about them in any of the classes I took regarding trans literature and gender studies. This lack of lexical knowledge reminds me of a clip we watched in one of those classes that talked about the invisibility of privilege. In essence it showed that as a white woman I don't see race everyday because whiteness is seen as the "norm". However, a black woman would be faced with the questions of race everyday. This ideology is consistent in every aspect of privilege. For example, as a non trans person I don't think about the struggles or the language of the trans-community on a day-to-day basis. I had never heard the term cis before, even though it applies to me, and it makes me wonder what else I am missing due to my "privileged" state. I feel like I got a little off topic there... In case you're curious about the clip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgaOK74HqiA And this is the article that he draws most of his lecture from: www.fjaz.com/kimmel.html
