[To be honest, I'm rather surprised that onlyaworkingtitle hadn't yet created this.]
I'm about 14% of the way through A Game of Thrones. I've watched the HBO series of the same name. I cannot wait for season two, nor can I wait to finish the first book.
I'm not sure what I like about the book. Maybe I'm biased because the show is just so pretty.
Anyway, I know Nora likes the series, but what about the rest of you?

I really like it too. Well, I do have some problems with it, mainly the heartless way Martin kills off characters. His books should come with a warning : DO NOT BECOME ATTACHED TO ANYONE, THEY WILL PROBABLY DIE. Though if he kills of Tyrion, I'm walking out. But the fact that he doesn't discriminate and makes everyone miserable is great.

Um... yeah, I'm a fan. Read the first three, got a bit into the fourth before losing it in the grocery store, am still immensely upset about that and can't afford to buy another copy (hint-holiday-presents-wink-nudge-hint-cough-whatever-else).
Watched the show before starting the books, then picked them up, LOVED THEM, lent the first to my mom, got her obsessed. I lent her the second the other day, and yesterday we marathoned the first season in two sittings. Ten hours of MADNESS. And amazingness. Really, this show is the best to marathon. It would only be better if there was MORE OF IT. BWAHAHAHA.
... Though the gratuitous erotic scenes were kind of awkward with my mom...
Oh, and my favorite characters are torn between Arya and Dany. I love me some strong female characters. And Tyrion, of course. Also, Jaime has grown on me a ridiculous amount -- redemption arcs for the win! And I'm starting to like Sansa a bit, now that she's becoming less naive...
The wolves are also favorites. I'm expecting great things from Shaggy Dog. AND NYMERIA NEEDS TO COME BACK LIKE TWO BOOKS AGO THIS IS SO NOT OKAY. And um. Yeah.
I went into the series expecting Jon to be a Big Favorite (because everyone's all like "Jon Snow, I luuuurve you!"), but I'm actually not such a fan of him. He's super whiny, like, all the time. Though I do enjoy hypothesizing about his parentage...
Cersei's a bitch. Like, a superbitch. The Bitchiest Bitch in All the Seven Bitchdoms. Blargh.

Favourite character(s)? We've been over this. I like Jon Snow; I expect great things from him. Is he whiny? Perhaps. But I've already started to see character development start with him at page 200, 1/4 of the way through the first book alone. He's had a hard life, not as hard as his Brothers in the Night's Watch, sure. DEFINITELY NOT. But you have to agree that his being 14/15 and thrown to that life would make most people whine, yourself included. His view of the world is warped: on the one hand, he was an ill-born son and suffered under a harsher-than-I-would-like "mother" and everyone reminding him of his parentage, on the other hand, he's had more benefits and privileges than his Brothers at the Night's Watch. I have nothing but hope for his character and cannot wait to see him grow up.
As for Cersei...ugh. Don't even get me started. I'm still irritated by what she made Ned due to Lady. HONESTLY. What?!
Other characters? I'm trying not to get too attached to Robb because I know what happens (curses to the wiki!), but I cannot help it. He's growing on me.
I don't really like the girls yet. Sansa...I have nothing in common with her, but I do pity her position. Arya hasn't really done much for me yet either, though I'm truly hoping that she does those sword lessons in the book as she did in the show. Her instructor is probably my favourite character overall; I refuse to believe he died. Myrcella, the princess...ugh. She's so meek and wimpy from what I've seen. I guess that's to be expected, though, considering her heritage. As for Dany, again, I haven't seen much from her. Intrigued to see what happens in season 2 of Game of Thrones, though, considering how it ends.
I have more thoughts already, but I don't much want to spoil the series for others. We need a spoiler tag or sommat.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
I loved the first book. I really did. It draws you into the world, introduces you to amazing characters. I can't believe what happened to Jory though, I wasn't even that attached to him until I watched the series. And Ned, oh, my poor stupid Ned. I loved him so. Can we assume people at least know what happens in the first book or series? Or are we not allowed to give out any spoilers?
Jon and Arya were my second characters. I didn't particularly find Jon whinny, I think I could understand a lot of what he's going through, so I can understand his complaints. I think it becomes more clear as the books progress and he realizes what kind of predicament he's in. SPOILERS like his Benjin did not really tell him about the wall at all, the dangers, the kind of people that are there. If Ben did, I don't think Jon would have gone there at all.
I could not stand Sansa, I hated her guts, again until we finally we start to see her as a person. After what she goes through with that fucking what's his face. It's also important to keep in mind that she's what like thirteen? I think most of us would have acted the same way.
BIG SPOILER!!!! The second that Robb shows up with his new fiance, I was like "something really bad is about to happen" and I was right. I sobbed for like ten minutes, even though I knew what was going to happen, because like Dodger I spoiled myself... I cried then too....
Tyrion is by far my favorite. He's intelligent and he never really changes in his views. On the other hand, that why I started liking Jamie. He really becomes a better person.
Danny I find a bit annoying, as well as Arya... I don't really get why she's everyone's favorite. Sure, she's a tough cookie, a survivor, but whatever.
I got bogged down reading Feast of Crows. I still haven't finished it. It just got so boring.

I don't get the love for Tyrion. He's not a terrible character, no, but I don't get his classification as "favourite character." It just baffles me. Perhaps it's because he plays the role of a fool (as in Renaissance terms)?
Jamie...Eh. I can't like him. His choices with his sister are just...no. Can't do it.
Goodreads tells me I'm ~1/3 of the way through the first book. Wishing, and hoping, and praying that I can get through it ASAP so I can buy the next one.

Well, we can't all agree on on the same thing, but I think you will get to like Tyrion over the course of the novels. I wouldn't say he's the fool, he just has the Middle Ages stereotypical look of one because he's a dwarf (is that the pc word for them?). But he's actually one of the most intelligent characters in the book.
Also, this might be a possible spoiler, but Jamie changes a lot as the books progress. But yes, in the first book he's actually pretty deplorable.

Nah, I meant fool as in the only person who is allowed, socially, to tell the full truth; they are allowed to criticize anyone of any stature, even the king, without repercussion.
People of society tell various lies and flatter their peers, especially in cultures as found in A Song of Ice and Fire. This is what I meant by Tyrion as the fool, not that he's an idiot. I find him quite intelligent, actually.

This is exactly why I like him as a character. As a person, I would run away screaming, but as a character? Oh gosh so much character development in the third book. So when I rewatched the first season, I spent all of his screentime thinking "Oh, look, an eensy bit of honorableness there! LET'S WATCH IT GROW."

No, see, that would break the "All attractive characters are either Starks or PURE EVIL" rule of the series. Jaime actually exemplifies this: In becoming a decent person, he becomes a hell of a lot less pretty. Like, maimed-and-bald-and-bearded less pretty.
The rule completely stands.
Conversely, hideous characters are more often Good(ish) Guys (though also not a rule; really, anyone can be a villain in this book except the Starks). Sooooo yeah.
